Chivu revives Lobotka handball row with training joke

Saturday's 3-2 was never shown on Rai — Serie A's rights sit with Dazn and Sky — but a wisecrack from Cristian Chivu at Appiano Gentile has put Stanislav Lobotka's handball back in the conversation.

Anyone still typing "Inter-Napoli Rai" into a search bar gets a simple answer: Saturday's game at San Siro was never on Rai, because no Serie A match ever is. Dazn holds the rights to every fixture each matchday, while Sky and NOW show three games a week, always available to stream. The reason the match is back in the conversation on Monday 7 September has nothing to do with broadcasters.

It started on the training pitch. During a torello warm-up drill at Appiano Gentile, Inter's training ground, with reporters watching, the ball struck the arm of one of Cristian Chivu's players. The head coach could not resist: loud voice, a sarcastic grin, and a line that needed no explaining in the Inter dressing room.

No hand, like Lobotka!

The line points back to the second half at San Siro. With Napoli ahead, Stanislav Lobotka touched the ball with his arm inside the box; referee Simone Sozza did not award a penalty, and VAR did not intervene. Inter's protests were loud and immediate during the game itself, and the episode did not end with the final whistle.

That Chivu brought it up again days later, on the eve of a Champions League trip to the Bernabéu to face Real Madrid, shows how much the decision still rankles at Inter, even wrapped in a joke for the cameras. The incident still stings at San Siro, even with the dust settled.

For Napoli, who threw away a 2-0 lead that night and still lost 3-2, the scene at Appiano Gentile changes nothing. The defeat stands, with the table showing 13th place and three points from three games. On Wednesday 9 September, at the Maradona against Arsenal, it is a different match — and this time Napoli have only themselves to worry about.
