Napoli collapse and referee anger dominate Sunday

Napoli were two goals up away at Inter on Saturday, then lost it in the space of thirty-four minutes. The game finished three-two to Inter, with Lautaro Martinez among the scorers as the hosts turned it around.

Sunday's papers are picking through the wreckage. Tuttosport says Lautaro Martinez should have been sent off twice, and DAZN's review flagged a disputed handball claim against Lobotka and a coming-together between Pio Esposito and Rrahmani. But the referee talk only goes so far. A team two-nil up away at Inter does not lose that lead in thirty-four minutes because of the officials alone; that is a problem on the pitch. Head coach Allegri had pointed words for Alisson Santos after the game, saying "right now we don't have the best of Alisson, too many errors." Alisson pushed back, saying Napoli "played better than against Como." That comparison is no comfort with Napoli twelfth in the table on three points from three games.

There is a darker note from Milan too. MP Francesco Emilio Borrelli has reported a racist gesture by an Inter fan towards Napoli supporters at the final whistle, filmed by a father with his young son beside him. Borrelli called it a shameful episode in what had been an enjoyable match until then.

Attention now turns to Wednesday, when Arsenal visit the Maradona for Napoli's Champions League opener, kicking off at 21:00 CET, 20:00 UK, 15:00 ET. Sweden's Glenn Nyberg will referee, with Spain's Carlos Del Cerro Grande on VAR. Allegri will be without McTominay and Giovane, both recovering from surgery, and Marianucci is also out, but Beukema is back and available. It is Allegri's first European game in charge, against opponents with no patience for a Napoli side still finding its feet. Off the pitch, the transfer talk has not stopped: Napoli's bid of 20 million euros for Galatasaray's Gabriel Sara was rejected, with the Turkish club holding out for 30 million, leaving the midfield still short of cover for McTominay.
